Japan Flora: Plants glabrous; leaves 2, 12-18 cm. long, 3-7 cm. wide, oblong to ovate-elliptic, glabrous, acuminate, acute at base, green above, glaucescent beneath, enveloped by an involute sheath at base; scapes 20-35 cm. long, shorter than the leaves; racemes 5-10 cm. long, loosely about 10-floweredj one-sided, the bracts membranous, broadly linear to lanceolate, shorter than to as long as the pedicel; flowers 5- 8 mm. long, the pedicels 6-12 mm. long, curved above, the perianth-lobes recurved, ovate-deltoid, acute; anthers broadly deltoid-lanceolate, about 1.5 mm. long, as long as the subulate filaments; style 3-4 mm. long; berry globose, about 6 mm. in diameter, red when mature. Apr .-June. Highlands and mountain meadows;

Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu. Sakhalin, Korea, China, e. Siberia.
