Japan Flora: Glabrous slightly fleshy biennial; stems few togetlier or solitary, often reddish, erect, 10-40 ciç”°. long, stout, terete, often short-branched in upper part; leaves obovate-ob­long to obovate or spathulate-oblanceolate, 2-5 cm. long, 1-2 cm. wide, obtuse to rounded, entire, lustrous, with black inner glands, sessile or subsessile; racemes erect, terminal, often compound-paniculate, very densely flowered, 4-12 cm. long in fruit, the pedicels spreading, 1-2 cm. long, about as long as the leaf like bracts; flowers white to pinkish, 1-1.2 cm. across; calyx-segments broadly lanceolate, obtuse, often with a few black glandular dots on back; corolla-lobes narrowly cuneate- oblong, obliquely spreading; capsules globose, 4-6 mm. in diameter. May-July. Near the sea.

Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu; common. Korea, Ryukyus, Taiwan, China, Pacific Islands, and India.
