Japan Flora: Resem­bles L. japonicum, but larger, sometimes a small tree; leaves coriaceous, ovate to broadly so, 6-10(-12) cm. long, 3-5 cm. wide, gradually narrowed to the acute tip, rounded to subacute at base, lustrous, pale green and obscurely punctulate beneath, the petioles brownish, 1-2 cm. long; panicles pyramidal, 10-18 cm. long and as wide; corolla 3-4 mm. long, the tube slightly shorter than the lobes; anthers oblong, L2-1.5 mm. long, the filaments elongate; styles 2.5-3 mm. long; fruit ellipsoid- globose, purple-black, 8-10 mm. in diameter; June-July. 

Chinese species widely cultivated in our area.
