Japan Flora: Culms 50-80 cm. long, nearly smooth; basal leaf­sheaths brownish red; spikes 4 or 5, approximate, erect, sessile, the upper 1 or 2 staminate, brownish purple, the lower 1-3 (-4) pistillate, short-cylindric, 1-2 cm. long, the lowest bract leaf­like; pistillate scales ovate, brownish purple, long-cuspidate; perigynia slightly longer than the scales, ovate, 3-5 mm. long, brownish, somewhat turgid, faintly nerved, slightly recurved toward apex, gradually narrowed to a rather conspicuous beak, entire at the tip; stigmas 2. June-July.

Honshu (Mount Hiruzen in Mimasaka Prov.).
