Japan Flora: Branches erect, elongate, slightly scandent above, with rather stout, flattened prickles, glabrous to short-pubescent; leaves ovate or broadly so, 5-12 cm. long, 4-8 cm. wide, acuminate, cordate at base, asperous and strigose-pilose especially on nerves on upper side, with spreading hairs beneath, acutely serrulate, shallowly 3- to 5-lobulate, the lateral lobes short, sometimes obsolete, the petioles 2-4 cm. long, prickly and short-pubescent; corymbs in a narrow terminal panicle 15-20 cm. long, short- pubescent, the pedicels 3-10 mm. long; calyx with a short tube, the lobes narrowly ovate-deltoid, 5-7 mm. long, acuminate, ascending, with dense white tomentum on margin; petals 4-5 mm. long, obovate-spathulate; stones about 1.5 mm. long, obliquely rugose.
