Japan Flora: Small tree, the young branches often puberulent; leaves coriaceous, lustrous, narrowly oblong to narrowly obovate, 5-8 cm. long, 1.5-3 cm. wide, caudate-acuminate with an obtuse or acute tip, glabrous, more or less thickened on margin, remotely toothed or entire, the teeth ascending to obliquely spreading, spine-tipped, the petioles 5-10 mm. long, glabrous; inflorescence 2-8 cm. long, rather densely many-flowered, pubernlent only while young, glabrescent, nearly sessile, the bracts caducous; flowers white, about 6 mm. across, the pedicels 3-7 mm. long; calyx-tube broadly obconical, longer than the loosely toothed ovate lobes; petals orbicular, about 3 mm. long, reflexed; drupes ellipsoidal or broadly ovoid, glabrous, about 8 mm. long.
