Japan Flora: Branchlets stouter, grayish to pale brown, glabrous; leaves rather thick, obovate to obovate-elliptic, sometimes elliptic, 8-13 cm. long, 5-8 cm. wide, rounded to broadly cuneate at base, vivid green on upper side, pale green beneath, glabrous on both sides, with narrowly deltoid awn-tipped teeth about 2 mm. long, some of the teeth doubly toothed, the petioles nearly green or slightly reddish, with a pair of glands near the top; flowers in corymbs, white, sometimes pink, 3.5-4 cm. across, the pedicels rather stout, elongate, glabrous, the bracts flabellate-obovate, about 1 cm. long; calyx-lobes serrulate with gland-tipped minute teeth; fruit rather large, dark purple. Mar.-Apr. Low mountains near the sea.
