Japan Flora: Branched, upright tree with glabrous branches; leaves opposite or subopposite, lanceolate to ovate or oblong, 3-8 cm. long, 12-30 mm. wide, obtuse, narrowed at base, entire, deep-green and lustrous above, paler or whitish beneath with many parallel slender veinlets; stamens fasciculate; seeds globose, 10-15 mm. wide, bluish green, slightly glaucous; receptacle small and not fleshy. May-June. Mountains.
Honshu (Chugoku), Shikoku, Kyushu; occasionally planted. Ryukyus and Formosa.
