China Flora: Tree; bark dark grey. Branchlets sparsely pubescent. Leaves papery, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 4.5-6 cm long, pointed or acuminate at the apex, rounded at the base, sparsely pubescent above, long pubescent along the veins below, with irregularly acuminate double serrations, 9-11 pairs of lateral veins; petiole 4-6 mm long, pubescent. Female inflorescence ovoid or ovoid-oblong, 1-1.5 cm long, peduncle 1-2 mm long; bracts 0.5-1 cm long, sparsely pubescent, ciliated at the margin, 3 lobes nearly equal in length, nutlets obovate, pubescent, with very narrow wings. Flowering in May, fruiting in July-August.

It is produced in western Hubei and Sichuan, and grows in dense forests on mountain slopes, in shrubs on mountain tops, and in rock cracks at an altitude of 1500-2600 meters. The wood is hard, heavy, and dense, and it can be used as a afforestation species in the production area.
