China Flora: Tree, up to 25 meters high. Young branches are sparsely pubescent, and then fall off. Leaves are papery, ovate-elliptic, elliptic or oblong-lanceolate, 5-14 cm long, with acuminate or caudal tips, rounded or slightly cordate at the base, glabrous above, densely covered with resin glands below, pubescent along the veins, with beards in the vein axils, irregularly fine and densely serrated, and 12-14 pairs of lateral veins; petiole 0.5-1.6 cm long. Female inflorescence solitary, erect, oblong or oblong-cylindrical, 2.5-6 cm long, peduncle 2-3 mm long; bracts 0.8-1.3 cm long, densely pubescent, lobes are all oblong, lateral lobes spread, as long as 1/2 of the middle lobe. Nutlets are narrowly elliptic or oblong-obovate, 4-5 mm long, with membranous wings as wide as 1/2 of the fruit. Fruiting period is August-September.

It is produced in Fujian, Jiangxi, southwestern Hubei, Hunan, northern Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan, and grows in hillside forests at an altitude of 700-1900 meters.
