Korea Flora: Deciduous shrub, 3m tall. Branches with solid white pith, bark grayish-brown; young branches with stiff hairs. Winter buds ovoid, glabrous.Leaves opposite, ovate-elliptic, (2)4-6(7) × (2)3-4cm; apex acuminate or obtuse, base cuneate; margins entire; both surfaces with bristly hairs on veins and margins; petioles 3-5mm long.Flowers emerging with leaves from axillary winter buds on new shoots, nodding; peduncles 3-12mm long; bracts 2, 4-12(usually 4-6)mm long. Calyx shallowly 5-lobed; corolla 10-13mm long, 15mm in diameter, nearly bilaterally symmetrical, base broad; petals long-lanceolate, glabrous externally. Stamens 5, 4-6mm long; anthers yellow, 3mm long; style 11mm long. Fruit nearly completely fused from 2 ovaries, with 3mm stalk, 10 × 12-15mm, red. Seeds ellipsoid, 3-4 × 3mm, dark brown.

Flowering April;
Fruiting May.
Distribution: Tsushima Island (Kyushu, Japan); Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do, Gyeonggi-do, Hwanghaenam-do, along western coast.
