Korea Flora: Deciduous vine. winter buds hidden in pouches. branchlets brownish pubescent while young, pith is brown and lamellate. leaf shape circular, and blade oblong-ovate or egg-shaped with a pointed or rounded apex and a heart-shaped or rounded base, 8-10(12)cm x 4-6(8)cm. leaf surface scattered glands or hairs, especially light brown hairs on veins and white hairs in axils. The leaf margin irregularly serrated, and the upper part of the leaf white or light red. Petiole 2-3(5)cm long and hairy. flowers dioecious and in clusters of 1-3 on the lower leaf axils. flowers 1.5cm in diameter, white with a pleasant fragrance, and calyx 5 egg-shaped lobes and white hairs. fruit and seeds oblong-ovate, 2-3cm long, yellow, and tasty.
The chromosome number = 58, 116. flowering late May to early June (early July in Jirisan). Fruiting mid to late September. Distribution: Northeastern China, Northern and Central China, Far Eastern Russia, Southern Kuril Islands, Hokkaido and Central Honshu in Japan; from Pyeonganbuk-do and Hamgyeongbuk-do to Mt. Jiri-san in south. Ecological features: It grows in the shady areas of deep mountainous regions.
