Korea Flora: Deciduous tree. Branchlets appear brown and bark-like, terminal buds 10-12mm. Leaves compound with (5)7-9 leaflets, broadly elliptical or ovate, size 5-19cm × 3-9cm. Leaflet undersides densely covered with long stellate hairs. Leaflets have more than 30-40 well-developed small teeth. No hair between leaflet stalks and flower axis. Leaflet stalks almost non-existent (1-2mm). Flowers dioecious, inflorescence grows on previous year's branches in panicles. No petals, sepals present and finely divided, distinguishing it from Fraxinus rhynchophylla which has cup-shaped calyx. Fruit and seed: Samara oblong-lanceolate, 3-4.5cm long, tip usually acute or slightly notched.
Flowering late April to mid-May.
Fruiting September-October.
Distribution: Korean endemic species. Jirisan, Deogyusan, Minjujisan, Naejangsan in Jeollanamdo, Jeollabukdo, and valleys in Gyeongsangnamdo.
Taxonomic notes: Previously misidentified as a hybrid between Fraxinus mandshurica and F. rhynchophylla, this is actually a Korean endemic species growing in deep valleys of North and South Jeolla Provinces and South Gyeongsang Province (Chang et al., 2002). Unlike F. rhynchophylla, which has a spreading crown, this species grows straight upwards, making it valuable as timber. Besides flower characteristics and leaflet shape, it's easily distinguished from other species by its winter buds composed of two large brown scales.
