Japan Flora: Tree, usually the branches puberulent when young; leaves chartaceous, somewhat lustrous, ovate-oblong to cuneate-oblong, 5-10 cm. long, 2-3.5 cm. wide, acuminate with an acute or sub- obtuse tip, with appressed or ascending minute teeth, glabrous on both sides except for pubescence along the midrib near the base beneath while young, the petioles 8-25 mm. long, sometimes puberulent on the upper side; racemes 5-10 cm. long, rather loosely flowered, puberulent; flowers white, about 5 mm. across; calyx with cup-shaped tube, the teeth short, broadly ovate, sometimes loosely toothed; petals broadly obovate, 2-3 mm. long, shorter than the stamens. Apr.-June. Hills and mountains.
