Japan Flora: Rather stout low annual or biennial; culms usually tufted, 10-30 cm., rarely to 40 cm. long, leaves not prominent, the blade short, rather flat; spikes firm, stout, often slightly curved, nearly cylindric, 10-15 cm. long; spikelets sunken in the excavations of the rachis, partly hidden by the appressed strongly nerved obtuse glumes; florets 3-6; lemmas oblong, about 5 mm. long, usually awnless. May-June. Natu­ralized.

Honshu (Kanto to Chugoku Distr.); rather rare. Introduced from Europe.
