Japan Flora: Perennial with thick, short rhizomes; stems erect, 30-40 cm. long, retrorsely short-pubescent; radical and lower cauline leaves depressed-orbicular, deeply 5-lobed nearly to the base, 6-10 cm. wide, deeply cordate, pubescent on both sides, the lobes narrowly rhombic-obovate, acute to acuminate, irregularly incised and coarsely toothed; flowers rather numerous, terminal, 2.5-3 cm. across, bltHsh purple, on short pedicels; sepals densely pubescent with long spreading, glandular hairs; filaments loosely long-pilose. July-Aug. Grassy slopes near seashores.
Hokkaido, Honshu (n. distr. and alpine region of Mount Hayachine in Rikuchu). e. Siberia, Sakhalin, Kuriles, Alaska, and N. America.
